Steven Patrick O’Connell, age 45, of Newalla, Oklahoma, passed away on January 23, 2026, from a sudden heart attack. Born on March 17, 1980, in Oklahoma City to Dale and Jamey O’Connell, Steve grew up with a strong work ethic, a curious mind, and a deep love for his family.
A 1998 graduate of Carl Albert Hight School, Steve began his working life as a fry cook at KFC. Over the years he held a variety of jobs, including managing a Papa John’s Pizza, always striving to learn, grow, and take care of those around him. His dedication and hands-on experience eventually led him to the career he loved most—working as a commercial and residential electrician. Steve took great pride in his craft and the people he served. Although he retired from electrical work in 2023 due to health limitations, he never stopped helping others. He continued taking on odd jobs for friends, neighbors, and anyone in need, because that was simply who he was.
Steve was known for his creativity and his desire to stay busy. He had a special passion for making handcrafted items, especially copper flowers, and he was always creating something unique with his hands. He found joy in small projects, laughter in everyday moments, and purpose in spending time with the people he loved.
In 2003, Steve met Wendy, who became his life partner and closest companion. He embraced her children—Michelle Bonilla, Laura Haas, and Timothy Ginn—as his own and cherished the families they built. Together, the family grew to include nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, each one a source of pride and happiness for Steve.
Steve is survived by his sisters, Elizabeth Sue O’Connell and Valerie O’Connell; his brother, Jimmy Aguilar; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He now joins in rest those who passed before him: his parents, Dale and Jamey O’Connell; his sister, Elizabeth Ann; and his grandparents, Matthew and Betty Partain.
Steve will be remembered for his kindness, his humor, his craftsmanship, and his unwavering willingness to help others. His presence will be deeply missed, but the love he shared and the lives he touched will continue to shine.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 3, 2026, noon – 5:00 p.m., at AE Funeral Services Chapel, 603 W. Independence St., Shawnee, Oklahoma 74804.
