Rita Marie Powell

Rita Marie Powell, 76 years, of Shawnee, OK passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 27, 2026. She was born on September 8, 1950 to Doris Hunter and Herman Watts in Enid, Oklahoma. Rita was raised and loved by Harrison Hunter as his daughter.

She graduated from McCloud High School, continuing her education at OBU-Oklahoma Baptist, followed by the School of Cosmetology. She resided in Shawnee and held a successful cosmetology and stylist career often encouraging other young people to pursue their own paths in life and ultimately teaching cosmetology.

Rita was well-known for her vivacious personality and traveled the United States where she often sang behind the drum and danced in her favorite Otoe-Missouria regalia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison and Doris Hunter; her brothers, Lloyd Watts, Richard Watts, Warren Hunter; her sisters, Deborah Hunter, Harriet Hunter, Karen Hunter; and grandson, Justice Stevens.

Rita is survived by her children, Lloyd Hunter and Doris “Sissy” Hood; sister, Annette Rice; brother, Henry Hunter; her grandchildren, Cheyenne Runsabove, Rylan Brady, Skush (Edward) Brady, Blaine Hood, Skylar Cross, Emily Hood; along with numerous, nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at the Otoe-Missouria Tribal Cultural Center in Red Rock, Oklahoma. Tribal Rites will be held on Monday, September 28, 2026 and Tuesday, September 29, 2026. Burial will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at the Otoe-Missouria Tribal Cemetery.
