Orvil Lorin “O.L.” Locke, Jr., beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed peacefully in Shawnee, Oklahoma, at the age of 85. Born in Madill, Oklahoma, on May 5, 1940, O.L. lived a life marked by intellect, curiosity, and compassion; quietly shaping the lives of those around him through steady presence, global experience, and quiet acts of devotion.

A proud graduate of Shawnee High School, Class of 1958, O.L. was remembered by classmates as a “real swell guy,” a sentiment echoed by dozens of handwritten notes in his yearbooks. Friends praised his kindness, unselfishness, and ability to make others feel seen. Notes frequently mentioned his sharp wit, warm smile, and especially “his” iconic convertible. These early words of affection and admiration proved prophetic.

He went on to attend OU and OBU, where he earned a degree in Business Administration with a minor in Fine Arts. He joined the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, adding to the network of lifelong friendships he maintained throughout his years. His education laid the groundwork for a successful career as a systems analyst and programmer, where his skills opened the door to international work, including several years in Indonesia. There, he helped establish a data center for an international oil company, an achievement that reflected both his technical excellence and adventurous spirit.

In 1964, O.L. entered the US Army and served honorably as a clerk typist at Fort Polk, Louisiana. His military record reflects steady, honorable service at home during a turbulent time, carried out with care and consistency.

Despite his accomplishments abroad, O.L.’s greatest contribution came at home. He gave up career advancement to return to Shawnee and care for his aging parents, especially his mother, Effie, during her long struggle with dementia. He did so without complaint, honoring his family with the full strength of his time, care, and loyalty.

Though he never married or had children, O.L. was a father figure to many in his extended family. He shared a deep bond with his brother, William “Will” Locke, with whom he created a legacy of memory-keeping and service. He was a treasured uncle to his nieces and nephews, and known as a thoughtful listener to countless others who sought his wisdom.

A man of refined tastes, O.L. loved music, art, literature, and design. His personal library included works by authors who knew and admired him. He corresponded with memoirists and thinkers, and his friendships often spanned decades. In the early part of his career, he also worked as a furniture designer—an endeavor he was deeply proud of. Later in life, he pursued pottery, sketching, music composition, screenwriting, and lyric writing, creating Broadway-style musicals, poems, and songs that he refined until his final days. His creative output reflected a spirit of deep reflection, curiosity, and inner joy.

In his spiritual life, O.L. remained grounded in the Methodist tradition, yet sought wisdom widely. He was a lifelong student of the Bible, often turning to pastors for interpretation and encouragement. He also read extensively across traditions—exploring the Qur’an, the Bhagavad Gita, ancient Egyptian writings, and Indigenous spiritual texts—not to challenge his faith, but to deepen it. His reverence for Scripture never wavered, and he approached every viewpoint with both curiosity and conviction.

O.L.’s generosity never faltered. He gave faithfully to St. Paul’s Methodist Church and supported a number of charitable organizations including Wounded Warrior Project and others. His giving extended to his family, blessing them with his finest artistic creations, handcrafted gifts from his travels abroad, and jewelry he designed himself—often inlaid with gemstones and thoughtfulness.

O.L. is preceded in death by his parents, Orvil and Effie Locke; his sister, Dorothy Locke Kinnamon; and his brother, William Locke. He is survived by his cousins: Karen Fletcher, Jack Anderson, and Monroe Holford; his nieces and nephew: Lori Romberg (David), Cal Locke (Dee), Shauna Clark (Will), and Stephanie Walker (John); his sister-in-law, Helen Locke; and numerous friends and neighbors who loved him dearly.

Those who knew O.L. will remember his quiet integrity, his humble brilliance, and his enduring kindness. Whether across oceans or across the street, he lived a life of presence, principle, and grace.

He will be missed, but not forgotten.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 12th at 1:30 PM at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Shawnee. Private burial will take place at a later date.
