After 76 years of enjoying an active and full life, we mournfully and dignifyingly announce John Randall "Randy" Thompson's departure from Earth to Heaven's pearly gates, on May 23, 2026. Though he enjoyed and fully lived an earthly life, he is now in eternal joy and paradise with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Born in Paris, TN, on July 12, 1949, Randy was the third, and arguably the most ornery and vibrant, of four children. During his high school years, he thrived in athletics, building hotrods with his brothers, and finding interest/expertise in whatever caught his attention. A natural leader, he was the captain of his high school football team, the Grove Blue Devils.
Soon after graduating high school, Randy was drafted into the United States Army in support of the Vietnam conflict. Not satisfied with serving in any "regular" Army capacity, his naturally competitive, physical, and leadership abilities landed him in an Army Special Forces occupation: Army Reconnaissance. He was proud of his military service to the United States of America.
A tradesman, Randy was an industrial maintenance mechanic and plumbing contractor. From the early 1990s to 2010s, he served the Tricounty Tennessee area, (consisting of Henry, Weakly, and Carroll counties), as a plumbing entrepreneur; many years, he was voted plumber of the year for the area. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, motorcycling, laughing with friends and family, poking [sometimes too much] fun at others, and involving himself in his childrens' activities. Adaptable and resilient, he took up competitive archery and bowhunting at the age of 71! However, his love for Jesus Christ, his family, and yearning to serve others showed through in all things in which he participated.
From 2020 to 2026, he resided in central Oklahoma to spend his retirement near his son, Greg; daughter-in-law, Jennifer; and their three children. With an open heart and loving spirit, he served his family to the highest caliber possible. Upon hearing the news of his death, his friends and family describe him as a "good man," "one of a kind," "amazing friend," "loving father and grandfather," "loyal," "funny," and "dependable."
Randy was preceded in death by his parents, William Clayton and Eddie Odell; sister, Judy; and brother, Charles. He leaves behind his son, Greg (Jennifer) Thompson and three granddaughters, AT, KT, and CT; stepsons, Adam (and son) and Cody; stepdaughters Ashley, Lacey, and Sonjia (and their children); brother, Richard; and multiple nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on June 6, 2026, at Open Doors Community Church, in Randy's hometown, Paris, TN to honor his life and legacy.
