Jerry Allan Mercer of McLoud, Oklahoma, passed away on February 13, 2026.
Jerry was born on April 2, 1948, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Thomas Clifford Mercer and Doris Mae (Hightower) Mercer. He was reared in Oklahoma City and attended Fillmore Elementary, Jefferson Jr. High and U.S. Grant High School. While in junior high, he was a member of the band. In high school, he was in reserve band, art club, tape club, National Thespian Society and Future Teacher of America. Upon graduation, he attended Cameron University where he was a member of the university band, Student Education Association, Baptist Student Union, Cameron Collegian Staff, and Student Senate. He had a master’s degree from the University of Guam and had graduate hours at Southwestern Oklahoma State University and the University of Central Oklahoma.
Jerry spent nearly 50 years as an educator: first, R-1 Schools in Charleston, MO; second, Tipton, OK Schools; third, Guam Public Schools; fourth, Garden City, KS Schools; fifth, Southside School in Elmer, OK; sixth, Fairfax Public Schools; seventh, Watonga Public Schools; eighth, Oklahoma City Public Schools. He also worked as a substitute teacher in Oklahoma City and Moore Schools.
During his years in education, he participated in numerous professional organizations which included: Missouri Education Association, Oklahoma Education Association, American Federation of Teachers and the International Reading Association. He also served on district and state committees for curriculum development, test development and professional development. He was in “Who’s Who in Education”.
Outside of education, he was a Sunday School teacher, a choir member, and a lay worship leader at First Osage Baptist Church; a lay youth leader at Tamuning Baptist Church on Guam; and a lay education director at First Baptist Church in Watonga, OK. He also worked with children’s choirs at South Hills Baptist Church and served as the Outreach Director for the Central Baptist Association. He was a longtime member of Southern Hills Baptist Church.
Jerry’s hobbies included reading, traveling, photography, genealogy research and being an Oklahoma Sooner fan.
Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Karen; parents, T.C. and Doris Mercer; grandparents, William P. Mercer and Anna (Wayland) Mercer and Cecil R. Hightower and Lennie (Donner) Hightower; brothers, Thomas Mercer Jr. and Dennis Mercer; grandson, Evon Emmons; daughter-in-law, Jane Armontrout; daughter, Linda Shields; numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.
Jerry is survived by his son, Conard Armontrout (Kim); daughters: Quina Armontrout, Robin Belvin (Arthur) and Connie Lobato (Aundrea Radford); eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one sister, Nancy Ames (David); numerous cousins and friends.
Jerry requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to American Cancer Society, Kidney Research, or the Music Ministry or Missions Ministry at South Hills Baptist Church.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 20, 2026, 1:00 p.m., at AE Funeral Services Chapel, 603 W. Independence St., Shawnee, Oklahoma 74804. Interment will follow at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Newalla, Oklahoma 74857.
