"A Mother's Remembrance" Dustin Charles Hobbs

Dustin Charles Hobbs, 45, was brought into the world by very proud parents, Gary and Belinda Hobbs, on May 2, 1980, at Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City. He unexpectedly entered the gates of Heaven and eternity, where Dustin would fully grasp and enjoy the adventure, on December 16th, 2025. He attended Liberty Academy in 1985 through 1989; moved to Tulsa attending Jenks School in 1990 and 1991; returned to Shawnee and graduated from Shawnee High School in 1998. He briefly attended OU after graduation. He recently earned an associate’s degree online at Strayer University majoring in business. He recently applied at OU to continue his education majoring in science.

He lived for a time in Enid, Oklahoma, working various jobs; and then lived and worked as a ranch hand for many years at his Uncle Mark Lipe’s farm, Raywood Farms, in Arcadia Oklahoma. The past three years, he lived with his mom at both Eufaula and Shawnee. He especially liked spending all of the past summer and through the end of October living full time lakefront on Eufaula Lake; where he truly enjoyed the lake atmosphere and all the associated wildlife. He grew up fishing with his Mom. He was in his element in nature around the lake and took many pictures of the lake, the wildlife, full moons reflecting off the water, the beautiful sunsets and his dog, Cara-Mel. He took long walks around the lake and into town with Cara-Mel; meeting new friends that he enjoyed fishing with. He would strike up conversations with strangers he met and befriended a homeless man living on the beach nearby. He loved the man’s dog, and on many days, he took the man both food and dogfood because of his caring heart. He especially enjoyed feeding the ducks and geese that would come right up to where he sat most days on the front porch. The three hummingbird feeders within feet of his chair attracted many hummingbirds that fascinated him. He got the biggest kick out of how the words “golf cart” had to be spelled if within hearing distance of Cara or she would excitedly insist to be taken for another ride. If he picked up her leash, he knew she would demand to be taken for another walk around the lake. During this time spent with his Mom, there were many special deep conversations about his inner thoughts and feelings. He regretted leaving Jenks and felt that his life would have continued on a better path, including acquiring a college degree, if he had stayed in school there. She will treasure this time, those deep enlightening conversations and the hundreds of pictures he took and constantly sent to her phone. In mid-November, he took some amazing and beautiful pictures of the Northern Lights. These memories and pictures are priceless treasures that will be kept in her heart forever.

Dustin had an adventurous spirit and travelled to the Virgin Islands on a whim in September of 2024 where he spent several months on an extended vacation; meeting and befriending many locals and taking hundreds of pictures. He was a tropical weather natural. Not surprisingly, he immediately acquired a dog upon his arrival there, named her Dixie, and the two were inseparable the entire time until he was leaving the islands and had arranged for her to be placed in a wonderful home in Florida. At the last minute, he tried to bring her back to Oklahoma but could not get her on the plane without having made previous preparations. He continued to receive pictures and videos of her in her new home but missed her deeply back in Oklahoma. The experience in the Virgin Islands left him with a renewed look on life. He wrote a journal about his experiences there that will be a lasting treasure. He stayed in touch with several of the people he met there and hoped to go back there soon to pick up where he left off. A job offer was made available to him and open for his eventual return.

His most valued relationship was with his dog, Cara-Mel, having her for the past four years. Knowing that his dying wish would be that Cara with his Mom, who Cara had become very attached to; that wish will be honored. Dustin knew that his Mom understood their special close bond, mutual love, and Cara’s importance to him. Cara will continue to have the best life and will be very well taken care of, continuing to be “top dog”.

Dustin is survived by both parents, his Mother Belinda Hobbs, of both Shawnee and Eufaula; and his Father Gary Hobbs, who resides with his current wife, Cathy, in Oklahoma City. He is also survived by a sister that he loved, Katie Roby and her son, Isaac of Edmond; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews too numerous to mention. He had a very close life-long bond with Kris McGuffee, of Colorado Spriings CO, the first born of all the cousins, having been the best man at Kris’s wedding. He flew to Colorado in mid-2023, spending a week with Kris. He also was survived by Tim Cowns who has been prominent in his life for the past 24 years and filled in at needed times as a father figure. A special friend, Kelley Rae Willis, helped Dustin in various ways right up until the present and was a kind, generous and helpful friend. Vickie Bowlan was special throughout his life who Dustin happily and affectionately referred to as “his second Mom”. it was happily acknowledged that her obvious unselfish motherly care, positive encouragement and devotion would put her first in line, standing ready, to fill that role if the need ever arose. It would be lacking on Dustin’s behalf not to mention Chris Penson, Angleton TX; a friend who literally learned to crawl alongside Dustin in 1980; and then had reconnected with Dustin in 2022 through the present. They communicated daily.

He was preceded in death by both his Maternal and Paternal grandparents; a first cousin who was close and special to him, Laura McGuffee Adcock, his close and favorite aunt, Ramona Mcguffee; and an Uncle David Hobbs.

Dustin was artistic, creative, witty and very intelligent; and was greatly loved by those who took the time to fully know him by engaging in lengthy interesting conversations with him. He will be missed beyond measure by those special close people in his life.

Plans are being made to honor Dustin at a later date in a way that would be the most meaningful to him. An important reminder to everyone in Dustin’s life is that this is and should be about him and only him. In lieu of flowers, a contribution made in his name to any animal rescue organization would be his desire. A contribution will be made in Dustin’s name to an as of yet undetermined appropriate sobriety organization by Dustin’s Mom.

It would be much more appropriate if all concerned made this about Dustin. Bless his heart. He lived a life of unfair turmoil put on him by the selfishness of others. The Hobbs family refuses to put Dustin’s best interest ahead of their own even in death. Therefore, Dustin suffers the consequences not only in life, but in death. The Hobbs family is refusing to combine services and has made clear in the obituary that they have written that they will keep services completely separate. May Dustin rest in peace. Many people, both friends and family are saddened for Dustin about this.
